The children’s opera orchestra, a cooperation with the twelve district music schools, will perform as part of FESTTAGE 2022 under the musical direction of Giuseppe Mentuccia (April 16, 2022). The show, moderated by Amelie Stiefvatter, will build a bridge to the opera season’s 2021-2022 program with excerpts from Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI, COSÌ FAN TUTTE, and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO as well as works by Edvard Grieg, Bedřich Smetana and Johann Strauss. In addition, they will play world premieres by young Berlin composers. For the first time, the children’s opera orchestra can also be experienced at a concert in Potsdam. (Further dates: April 29 & May 8 at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and May 16 at Nikolaisaal Potsdam.)
The Berlin Children’s Opera House, which was awarded the OPUS KLASSIK award in 2020 and is now firmly anchored in six Berlin districts, is one of the pillars of educational work at the State Opera, just like the Children’s Opera Orchestra. In the original district of Lichtenberg, where the initiative was launched over ten years ago, as well as in Marzahn and Reinickendorf, there are regional centers; school groups have been initiated in a total of eleven locations, while the threads converge at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In total, hundreds of children from all Berlin districts are reached, some of whom come into contact with the art form opera for the first time. In the 2021-2022 season, two premieres of the Unter den Linden children’s opera house will be performed.
After the pandemic production was no longer feasible in June 2021, the children between the ages of 10 and 13 deal with the theme SEHNSUCHT (“Nostalgia” or “Longing”). They begin with LOHENGRIN, under the guidance of experienced professionals from the opera world. This production will premiere on October 20, 2021 in the Old Orchestra Rehearsal Hall under the musical direction of Uwe Sochaczewsky and directed by Ulrike Schwab (co-director: Georg Schütky). SPEED, YOUR WHIRLING WINDS is the second production of the Unter den Linden Children’s Opera House at the end of the season (July 3, 2022). For the first time, the Berlin Children’s Opera House is dedicating itself to a work by Johann Sebastian Bach. Together with professional musicians under the direction of Adrian Heger, choreographer Kathlyn Pope from the Berlin State Ballet, and members of the International Opera Studio, the ensemble is developing its own piece of music theater.
As part of the BAROCKTAGE, THESEUS’ JOURNEY INTO THE UNDERWORLD celebrates its premiere for young people of primary school age on November 5, 2021 in the old orchestra rehearsal hall of the State Opera. There will even be four advance screenings in Berlin’s primary schools. The traveling children’s opera, based on motifs by Rameau’s HIPPOLYTE ET ARICIE, is a cooperation with members of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra; the singing part is performed by ensemble member Adam Kutny.
On February 12, 2022, the audience premiere of Lucia Ronchetti’s children’s opera PINOCCHIOS ABENTEUER, staged by Swaantje Lena Kleff and conducted by Adrian Heger, can be experienced in the old orchestra rehearsal hall.
The concerts for schools and family concerts in the Great Hall are new. In addition, the offer of the Junge Staatsoper includes children’s concerts, workshops, visits to rehearsals, family and school performances, the composition workshop, projects such as “Rhapsody in School,” the music theater labyrinth, as well as the youth choir.
