The Staatskapelle Berlin, under the direction of Zubin Mehta, and with Daniel Barenboim on the piano.
On the occasion of the 85th birthday of Zubin Mehta, honorary conductor of the Staatskapelle Berlin and a regular guest at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, experience a birthday concert! The Staatskapelle Berlin will play under the musical direction of Zubin Mehta and with Daniel Barenboim, his long-time friend and companion, as a soloist on the piano. The concert will be performed on his birthday, April 29th, in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and will be streamable at 2:00 p.m. EST on the websites of the Staatsoper and Staatskapelle Berlin for 24 hours worldwide.
“Dear Zubin, I am particularly happy that the Staatskapelle appointed you their honorary conductor a few years ago, and it is my greatest pleasure that we can always celebrate our special birthdays with the musicians of the orchestra. All our good wishes accompany you from the bottom of our hearts. Your friend and colleague, Daniel”Daniel Barenboim
The program includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, and Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major, D 944 “Die Große.”
Zubin Mehta has chosen music from Vienna, where he studied conducting and experienced significant influences, for this anniversary concert. In addition to the classic Beethoven, there is his direct contemporary Schubert, who in his “großen C-Dur-Sinfonie” demonstrated that it was possible to open up new horizons of musical expression. Two true peak works of the early 19th century illuminate each other.
