On September 11th, the celebratory concert “450 Years of the Staatskapelle Berlin” will take place under the musical direction of Daniel Barenboim in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. During the anniversary concert, there will be greetings from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, and Matthias Schulz, Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

On its 450th birthday, the Staatskapelle Berlin is embarking on a journey through music history under its General Music Director Daniel Barenboim. The program includes Carl Maria von Weber’s overture to “Der Freischütz,” premiered in 1821 by the former court orchestra in the Königliches Schauspielhaus Berlin, “Initiale” by Pierre Boulez, who was made honorary conductor of the Staatskapelle Berlin in 2005, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s 7th. Symphony. In addition, Jörg Widmann’s commissioned work “Zeitensprünge – 450 bars for orchestra,” will be premiered to celebrate the anniversary.

The sold-out concert will be streamed live online on Arte Concert and on www.staatskapelle-berlin.de and staatsoper-berlin.de. It will be broadcast on television on September 13th at 10:50 a.m. EST. In addition, Deutschlandfunk will broadcast the festival concert live on the radio.

“The Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the oldest orchestras in history. What a fantastic orchestra it must have always been, as testified not least by the many great composers and conductors with whom it has worked. The list is long and includes such important names as Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Erich Kleiber, Herbert von Karajan and many more. When the Staatskapelle elected me as chief conductor for life in 2000, it was both a great honor and a joy for me. After almost 30 years together, I can only be grateful for the freshness and curiosity with which the musicians rehearse and play every day. I hope that we will achieve many more highlights together,” said General Music Director Daniel Barenboim.

Artistic director Matthias Schulz: “A special feature of the Staatskapelle Berlin is its dual identity as a concert and opera orchestra, and making music in both areas influences each other in the most beautiful way. The Staatskapelle Berlin has an unmistakable warm, full sound. Hardly any other orchestra has such a legato culture and can play so closely. I congratulate the Staatskapelle Berlin on an incredible 450 years and look forward to many more great moments with them.”
