First Productions of the Season

The world premiere of WALK THE WALK, a performance by Simon Steen-Andersen, in the old orchestra rehearsal room & the resumption of ARIADNE AUF NAXOS on the big stage.

Finally, music theater in the Unter den Linden again! The premiere of a performance by Simon Steen-Andersen as part of LINDEN 21 is already on the program for September 10th in the old orchestra rehearsal hall with WALK THE WALK. The first opera production of the 2020-2021 season on the big stage will be the resumption of Richard Strauss ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, in the production of Hans Neuenfels, starting September 13th, under the musical direction of Thomas Guggeis.

WALK THE WALK premieres on September 10th for four performers, treadmills, objects, light and smoke, by the Danish composer and media artist Simon Steen-Andersen. This work is in collaboration with Brian Archinal, Victor Barceló, Miguel Ángel García Martín, and Bastian Pfefferli from the Swiss drummer quartet Ensemble This | Ensemble That. WALK THE WALK will be premiered as part of LINDEN 21 in the Old Orchestra Rehearsal Hall. In keeping with the key word “restless,” that stands above the season, movement, especially the act of walking, is the starting point of production: Walking can define a space, it can convey meanings and expectations, but it is also a genuinely musical element that is inseparable from pulse, speed, rhythm, direction, synchronicity, and kinetic energy. Inspired by experimental arrangements and documentation from early movement researchers, this is a multimedia performance about speed and movement. WALK THE WALK is a production and a composition commission from the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Musica Strasbourg, Gare du Nord Basel and KLANG Copenhagen.

The opera season on the big stage opens on September 13th with the resumption of ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, staged by Hans Neuenfels. The musical director is Thomas Guggeis, who was appointed Staatskapellmeister last season. The Staatskapelle Berlin is playing, and the vocal parts are made up of singers from the ensemble of the State Opera Unter den Linden as well as current and former members of the International Opera Studio, which is funded by the Liz Mohn Culture and Music Foundation. Performing on the stage of the Staatsoper are Anna Samuil in the title role, Andreas Schager as Bacchus, as well as Roman Trekel, Katharina Kammerloher, Sarah Aristidou, Gyula Orendt, Linard Vrielink, Frederic Jost, Andrés Moreno García, Evelin Novak, Natalia Skrycka, Victoria Randem, Spencer Britten, Jaka Mihelač, David Oštrek, and Florian Hoffmann. Elisabeth Trissenaar is featured as the steward and JARNOTH as the puppeteer.

On October 3, 2020 Luca Francesconi’s QUARTET, directed by Barbara Wysocka, will be staged for the first time at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and conducted by Daniel Barenboim. The two-person opera based on Heiner Müller’s play of the same name, which is based on Choderlos de Laclos’ famous epistolary novel “Dangerous Liaisons,” premiered in English in 2011 and is now being staged for the first time in German. Mojca Erdmann (Marquise de Merteuil, role debut) and Thomas Oliemans (Vicomte de Valmont, house and role debut) will perform.
