HOMO DEUS: May 31, 2021 on YouTube

On May 31st, experience HOMO DEUS, the radio play production of the youth club of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, as part of this year’s Theatertreffen der Jugend (Digital Edition)!

HOMO DEUS, the radio play production of the youth club of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in 2020, was selected from 104 nationwide applications as one of eleven projects for this year’s digital edition of the Theatertreffen der Jugend and can be experienced online as part of the festival on May 31st. In addition, the piece will be available on the Youtube channel of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden until further notice.

The production, which was developed by the members of the youth club together with Adrienn Bazsó (youth club director, director) and Panagiotis Iliopoulos (musical director, director), deals with the term “Homo Deus” introduced by the historian Yuval Noah Harari and fills it with its own visions for the future: mankind has left behind illness, hunger and physical decline. Instead, it benefits from permanently-healing genetic engineering, a perfected absorption of nutrients, personified virtual realities, and permanent networking. Homo Deus lives an optimized everyday life in harmony with individualized technical systems. All of this is closely interrelated with his greatest achievement: the ultimate victory over (the once inevitable) death. Homo Deus, the “divine human,” is a new species, a creature of the future, hyper-intelligent, self-optimizing, highly technological, almost immortal cyborg — an upgrade hunter, simulation junkie, multitasking talent, and deep down still human.
The Theatertreffen der Jugend honors exemplary and remarkable work by young theater makers, and has been offering them an annual platform for artistic reflection since 1979. The national competition sees itself as a showcase for young perspectives and independent forms in which the artists formulate their topics and points of view and present them for discussion. At the same time, it opens up a creative meeting place and inspires, in the accompanying workshop program, the individual and creative development of young theater makers.

Coming Up: This year’s production of the youth club SINFONIE UNSERER STADT celebrates its digital premiere on June 12th on the YouTube channel of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.
