A gesture of thanks to helpers during the COVID-19 crisis! This open-air concert, which celebrates the 450th anniversary of the Staatskapelle Berlin this year, includes Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Lang Lang, and the “Ode to Joy” with Julia Kleiter, Waltraud Meier, Andreas Schager and René Pape as vocal soloists, will be free thanks to BMW Berlin.
On Sunday, September 6th, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and its long-time partner BMW Berlin invite you to STAATSOPER FÜR ALLE (Staatsoper for All) at Bebelplatz. Due to COVID-19, the open-air concert will take protective measures. As a big Thank You, it is initially dedicated to all those who make a fundamental contribution to society through their work in the COVID-19 crisis. Entry is free thanks to BMW Berlin.
To celebrate the occasion of the 450th birthday of the Staatskapelle Berlin, and the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, the concert will feature the piano concerto No. 2 with pianist Lang Lang, as well as the 9th symphony, with “Ode to Joy,” with Julia Kleiter, Waltraud Meier, Andreas Schager and René Pape as vocal soloists as well as the State Opera Choir. The concert will be recorded by ZDF and broadcast on September 13th at 4:15 p.m. EST. In addition, it will be livestreamed on September 6th at www.staatskapelle-berlin.de and www.staatsoper-berlin.de.
Due to the COVID-19 requirements for large events, Staatsoper for All will take place this year with a limited capacity of approximately 2,000 people. Therefore, access is only possible with tickets. As a special thanks, the concert is dedicated to those people who provide significant support to society through their work in systemically relevant areas – from healthcare to essential business and logistics; Tickets are available in advance for this group of people. The remaining tickets can be booked starting August 20th at www.staatsoper-berlin.de.
“It is simultaneously a great pleasure and honor for me to conduct a concert on the Bebelplatz on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Staatskapelle Berlin with the motto STAATSOPER FOR ALL. We are happy to dedicate the evening in particular to the people who have achieved great things during the COVID-19 crisis and we are particularly grateful to BMW this year for their commitment. Our thanks also go to the ZDF, which will broadcast the concert and thus make it accessible to all other music lovers,” said Daniel Barenboim, Music Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Staatskapelle Berlin.
…we would like to give something back with Staatsoper for All and this live experience and, above all, thank those who have done so much for our society over the past few months.Matthias Schulz
Director Matthias Schulz says, “STAATSOPER FOR ALL has a very special meaning for us this year: On the one hand we look back on the 450th anniversary of the Staatskapelle Berlin, on the other hand the concert is a symbol of a new beginning for the culture after the COVID-19-related silence – an interruption of the theatrical business like never before in the long history of the State Opera Unter den Linden and the orchestra. Together with BMW, we would like to give something back with Staatsoper for All and this live experience and, above all, thank those who have done so much for our society over the past few months. Especially in a crisis, it is clear how important good partnerships and trust in the power of culture are and I would therefore like to thank our main partner BMW for its long-term, close cooperation.”
Sebastian Mackensen, Head of Market Germany BMW Group: “As one of the most traditional formats of the BMW Group’s cultural commitment, Staatsoper for All has been a fixed and special date in the Berlin cultural calendar for fourteen years. When the audience gathers on Bebelplatz to experience musical delights in the open air, an incomparable atmosphere is created.”
The governing mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, has taken over the patronage for Staatsoper for All.
The start of the 2020/21 season is all about the 450th anniversary of the Staatskapelle Berlin: in addition to STAATSOPER FOR ALL, the Beethoven cycle under the musical direction of Daniel Barenboim will be on the program from August 31 (further concerts on September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th). The festival concert “450 Years of Staatskapelle Berlin” will take place on September 11, also conducted by General Music Director Daniel Barenboim. The program includes works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Strauss, Pierre Boulez and Ludwig van Beethoven. In addition, Jörg Widmann’s “450 Takt,” a commissioned work on the occasion of the anniversary, will be premiered. On September 12th, a birthday party for the orchestra will follow, which will be adapted to the applicable safety measures. On this “Day for the Staatskapelle Berlin,” experience the musicians in changing chamber music formations and small orchestras with free entry to the Great Hall. Counting cards are required and will be issued at the end of August. The anniversary will be flanked by further offers from the house and by an exhibition on “450 years of the Staatskapelle Berlin” in the Apollosaal. Advance sales for events with reduced space in August and September have already begun.
