SLEEPLESS: the 2021-2022 season at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden

We are pleased to be able to present you the program for the 2021-2022 season, which is titled “SLEEPLESS”: losing track of time. It’s a feeling that we have had over the last year due to the long wait for, among other things, openings: for vaccinations and for closeness. Insomnia arouses positive and negative associations – as an absence of calm and relaxation, but also as a state of excitement and expectation. After the last year, during which we were able to keep the engine of our institution running, we now want to look forward together full of anticipation and finally experience music together again!

The story “Schlaflos” by Jon Fosse is also the basis for a new opera by Peter Eötvös, which will be staged in the next season under the title SLEEPLESS by Kornél Mundruczó. In addition to this world premiere, further features of the 2021-2022 season include:

• Five premieres in the Great House (see “Premiere” section below)

• LINDEN-21 with two world premieres, a new production, and an audience premiere

• BAROCKTAGE (November 5-14, 2021) with a focus on the rich musical culture of France, including the new production of André Campra’s IDOMÉNÉE, conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm and staged by Àlex Ollé from La Fura dels Baus

• FESTTAGE (April 6-17, 2022) featuring two complete performances of the Mozart & Da Ponte trilogy, conducted by Daniel Barenboim and staged by Vincent Huguet

• The public premieres of Mozart’s LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Wagner’s LOHENGRIN and Janáček’s JENŮFA – three new productions from the 2020-2021 season, which will now be performed live in front of an audience for the first time

• The resumption of 22 musical theater works, including Strauss’s DER ROSENKAVALIER, which was the last big premiere before the start of the pandemic, as well as a focus on Puccini

• Over 120 concerts in Berlin, with around 90 programs and a European tour by the Staatskapelle Berlin under the direction of Daniel Barenboim

• Opera and concert repertoire from Leoš Janáček, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Puccini and Robert Schumann, flanked by compositions from the baroque to the present day

• A total of 320 events, two STAATSOPER FOR ALL editions (at the beginning and at the end of the season), as well as numerous projects by the Junge Staatsoper, including performances by the children’s opera orchestra and the Unter den Linden children’s opera house

• The Staatsopernchor’s 200th anniversary, as well as the tenth anniversary of the Orchester des Wandels, a sustainability initiative by members of the Staatskapelle Berlin
